Garbage Disposal Care Tips

As much as we want to be the plumbing contractor you call when you have garbage disposal repair needs, we’d also like to help you take the best care of your current disposal so you won’t run into frequent emergency problems. Here’s ways to keep your disposal running smoothly for years:

  • Keep FOG out of the disposal: FOG stands for "fats, oils, and grease," which is shorthand for cooking byproducts that shouldn’t go down a disposal. FOG may look harmless when it’s in hot liquid form after cooking, but when it cools it turns into a tough, waxy solid that will jam up a disposal and shorten its lifespan.
  • Don’t use the disposal as a garbage can: The term "garbage disposal" is a bit misleading, since you don’t want actual garbage—inorganic material like paper and plastic—to go down it. Keep actual trash in the trash can.
  • If your teeth can’t chew it…: Here’s a good rule of thumb: any food product that you can’t chew with your teeth is something that shouldn’t go down the disposal—because it can’t chew it either. This includes meat bones, fruit pits, and popcorn kernels
  • Don’t use ice cubes to "sharpen the blades": You might have seen advice about pouring ice cubes down a disposal and running it to sharpen its blades. This doesn’t work (there aren’t any sharp blades in the disposal, only blunt impellers) and can damage the mechanics of the disposal.
