Signs That Your Heat Pump Needs Some TLC

Technician servicing an hot-water heater

One of the most common questions we get from our customers is, how do you know when your heat pump needs some TLC? Your heat pump should last about 15 years based on the average lifespan. But as your heat pump gets closer to that 15-year mark, there’s a greater chance that you need to repair or replace parts.

If you need heat pump repair in Edison, NJ, our team can help. There are five top warning signs that your heat pump is struggling to run and needs attention—ASAP. If you notice one or more of the signs below, give us a call right away to address the problem. Taking good care of your heat pump can keep it running for years longer than average.

Difficulty Turning On

Your heat pump should turn on to heat your home with ease. If the system struggles to turn on or doesn’t turn on at all, that’s definitely a problem. This might seem obvious, but you would be surprised how many people try to troubleshoot and get the system to work, ignoring potential problems.

If your heat pump won’t turn on, first check the thermostat to make sure that the settings are correct. If everything looks right, you can move on to checking your circuit breaker panel. Sometimes your heat pump can lead to a breaker tripping and turning off power to the system.

If neither of these things work, it’s time to give us a call. You could have a broken reversing valve or starter capacitor. These two issues are easy to fix and we can get your heat pump back to working like normal again in no time.

No Heat

When it’s winter you want to have hot air coming through the vents and into your home to provide heat and comfort. If the air is lukewarm or cool, then something is wrong. If your home is still comfortable then you may be tempted to ignore lukewarm air—but don’t! The air filter may be clogged and blocking airflow. If this is the case, it’s as easy as replacing the air filter. But if that’s not the problem, then you may have a refrigerant leak that needs to be fixed and the refrigerant recharged.

Always Running

Your heat pump should turn on and off in cycles. If the heat pump is running constantly or turning off and right back on again, something is wrong. The compressor contractor is a part that controls power levels throughout your heat pump. If this part is broken, the power may stay on constantly instead of maintaining heating cycles as it should.

Smell and Sounds

Your heat pump isn’t completely quiet, but it also shouldn’t produce sounds that are particularly loud or alarming. If you’ve had your heat pump a while then you’re probably used to the normal noises it makes when it turns on and off and runs throughout the day. Hearing loud banging, booming, whistling, or screeching is a sign that something is wrong.

The same goes for unusual smells. The air coming out of your air vents shouldn’t have an odor. If it does, something may be burning up inside the system. There’s also a chance that mold and mildew are growing somewhere in the system and leading to a foul odor.
